Two brides, one groom: Iraqi marries two women in one night

Abdul Rahman Nayef al-Obeidi falls in love with two women, but instead of choosing between them, he married both in one night.

Middle East Online

'Hero', or 'Poor guy'?

SAMARRA (Iraq) - Abdul Rahman Nayef al-Obeidi, a 22-year-old Iraqi farmer, fell in love with two women, but instead of choosing between them, he married both in one night in a small village in central Iraq.

The wedding ceremony for Obeidi and two of his cousins, Intidhar, 17, and Suad, 22, was held on April 6 at his family home in Al-Laqlaq village, north of Tikrit.

The ceremony was attended by the families of his two brides, relatives and friends, who were happy and surprised.

Obeidi, the youngest of five sons, said that he informed his parents about his plan to marry his two cousins in one night and they encouraged him, though many of his relatives were against the idea.

"It took me less than one month to make a final decision because the two families are my relatives and I love the two girls," Obeidi said.

The most important step was to persuade the two young women.

Intidhar said: "He told me, 'We will marry, me, you and Suad, in one night, so what do you say?' And I told him it is all right, if you treat us both the same way."

Islam permits men to marry up to four women, but stipulates that the wives must be treated equally.

Suad said she was surprised when Obeidi told her about his idea, but he persuaded her to go along.

Obeidi's older brother Salman played the role of mediator in the negotiations with the two families, and succeeded in making his brother's dream come true.

His father, Nayef Hamid said he feels proud of his son, although he is the only of the five sons to marry two women.

Hamid said that he is ready to support all his sons if they decide to marry twice.

Obeidi's mother, Rasmiya Mohammed too said she supported her son and did not want him to feel sad because he loves the two women.

Commentary on a picture of the married trio posted on Facebook was mixed, with men generally supporting the idea, and women against it.

"This man is a hero. There is no one who has done that before him, and this man should be put in Guinness Book of World Records," Ali Bassi Abbar wrote.

But Sara Yasser disagreed, writing sarcastically: "Poor guy; he did not want to break one of their hearts. He is really a nice man."

Another woman, Sara Saad, criticised the two new brides, writing that, "Any woman who agrees to such a marriage does not have any sense or dignity."

Cute ones.... desis

Nazar jub tum se milt hai

Nazar jub tum se milt hai
main khud ko bhool jata hoon,

Bas ek dharkan dharkti hai

main khud ko bhool jati hoon,

Tumhain milne se pehle

main bhot sajta sanwarti hoon,

Magar jab tum sanwarty ho

main khud ko bhool jati hoon.

Main aksar kitabon pe tera

he naam likhti hoon,

Magar kuch tum jo likhty ho

main khud ko bhool jati hoon

Mohabbat ki haseen raahon mein aksar maine dekha hai,

Mohabbat ki haseen raahon mein aksar maine dekha hai,
Jo sathi sath chalte they, bichhartey maine dekha hai,

Sajaatey they barey hi shoq se khayalon ki haseen duniya,
Bohat choti si baaton pe ujartey maine dekha hai,

Jo kehte they k ik pal bin tere hum reh na payenge,
Saamna ab ho to chup chap guzartey maine dekha hai

Jo kehte they tera rishta zamaney bhar se afzal hai
Unhi rishton ko pal bhar mein bikhartey maine dekha hy

8 Things You Should Never Say to a Woman

8 Things You Should Never Say to a Woman

8 things a woman NEVER wants to hear8 things a woman NEVER wants to hearI am no expert in relationships and I don't really plan to ever become one. I am married and would say 'happily' for going on 8 years now (yeah, that makes me feel old!) and we have been together for 13 years, since high school. Marriage has it's ups and downs and peeks and valleys and is a relationship that takes work as two people change and grow and grow-up.

My husband is a pretty awesome guy. He brought me all my cravings when I was pregnant, held my hand and protected my heart through our hard times and knows how to make me laugh like no one else can. We have this great partnership that's necessary for us to raise our children and they are lucky to have him as well.

The 10 worst things you can say to your husband...and probably do

He is a dude though and sometimes the wires get crossed between what I'm trying to say and what he hears. I won't confess if he's ever said any of these phrases, but I can assure you if he has/does - he will get a good talking to.

94-year-old Billionaire Marries for Fifth Time. To Be Old, Rich and in Love

94-year-old Billionaire Marries for Fifth Time. To Be Old, Rich and in Love

The billionaire with wife number five. (Foto © AP)The billionaire with wife number five. (Foto © AP)If you had almost five billion dollars, what would you do? For Karl Wlaschek, the answer is marry a lot.

Forbes is reporting via Vienna News that Austrian retail tycoon Wlaschek will wed for the fifth time at the ripe old age of 94. His bride-to-be, girlfriend Friederike 'Ricki' Schenk, won't reveal her age, but is likely a good three decades behind her groom. That means Wlaschek, a self-made mogul, has defied stereotypes by proposing to a woman who's closer to his age than the average Hef-to-twin-sisters ratio.

Still, the billionaire with the prolific marriage history is a plot-line we've seen over and over again. Revlon honcho Ron Perelman wed number five two years ago, shortly after the ink dried on his brutal divorce from actress Ellen Barkin. Larry Ellison and T. Boone Pickens are up to number four and the night is still young.

Five-timer Wlaschek earned his $4.7 billion dollar bank account by founding Billa, a European supermarket chain. He's since become one of the biggest real estate magnates in Austria. He announced his engagement at one of his own properties, a sprawling five star hotel in his native country, where he once played as a struggling young jazz pianist, back when the musical genre was in its infancy.

The groom met his future bride at a Vienna event a few years back, and soon realized somewhat touchingly or morbidly depending on your vantage point, that they'd both lost their last spouses on the very same day.

The couple's wedding is set to take place in a few days, according to Forbes (although some German gossip pages are saying the big day already happened this past Saturday).

The self-made Wlaschek already has four kids but still wants "another five or six children, at the very least." His bride laughed that comment off, saying "I am not so young any more."

The best smartphones to buy for less than $100 (and without a long-term contract)

Great deals on smartphones are not always what they appear to be.

Most smartphones that are "on sale" for less than $100 will end up costing you thousands over the course of a required two-year contract. Of course, you can buy a smartphone without a contract, but end up paying several hundred dollars for a device that could be outdated by the time you leave the store. Neither of these options are great for the pocketbook.

Thankfully, there are quality phones available at smart prices that you won't have to commit to long-term. Whether you sign up for a more flexible plan from a smaller cellular carrier, go with a prepaid billing option, or purchase an "unlocked" smartphone from an online retailer, there are excellent deals to dial into.

Here are the best smartphones to buy for less than a hundred bucks, but with no strings attached.

BlackBerry Curve 8530/Virgin Mobile ($99.99)

Have you ever wanted to get your hands on a RIM BlackBerry device but felt priced out by the two-year contracts required by the major carriers including Verizon, AT&T, Spring and T-Mobile? Enter Virgin Mobile. Right now, Virgin is offering the BlackBerry Curve 8530 smartphone for just $99.99. This rugged device is still a favorite in the corporate world, offering great security and plenty of connectivity options. With a full QWERTY keyboard, access to thousands of apps in BlackBerry's App World, a 2-megapixel camera, and social networking features, the Curve is a good way to enter into the world of RIM without the hassle of a long-term contract.

Virgin Mobile's smartphone plans start at just $35 a month and include 2.5GB of full-speed 3G data. Best of all, there are no credit checks, activation fees or service contracts.

HTC Wildfire S/U.S. Cellular ($99.99)

Largely for its affordable offerings, U.S. Cellular often tops the charts when it comes to customer satisfaction surveys. As well as a good selection of contract-based smartphones, there are prepaid ones too, and we spotted the gray HTC Wildfire S (also in purple) for just $99.99 online. Though it is not the fastest or newest Android smartphone out there, the HTC Wildfire is still perfectly capable of running thousands of Android apps, boasts a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen, 5-megapixel auto-focus camera and runs on the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system.

U.S. Cellular offers a variety of prepaid plans for the HTC Wildfire S starting at $40 per month (there are cheaper plans, but you'll need a data plan if you're buying a smartphone). U.S. Cellular also provides strong 3G coverage across the United States and high voice-call quality.

ZTE Score/Cricket Wireless ($89.99)

Cricket Wireless offers a decent selection of no-contract smartphones under $100 that work on its 3G network. The ZTE Score is an Android smartphone available for just $89.99. Admittedly, this is a pretty basic device, yet it still features a 3.5-inch HVGA display, accelerometer, 3.2-megapixel camera and, most importantly, access to the hundreds of thousands of apps in the Google Play Store. Despite its lowly processor and smallish screen, it's still perfectly capable of running many of your favorite games, social networks and productivity tools.

Alternatively, for customers seeking an Android smartphone with a traditional slide-out keyboard, the Samsung Transfix is available from Cricket for just $99.99 for a limited time. With a 3.5-inch HVGA touchscreen, 3.2-megapixel camera and an 800MHz processor, like the ZTE Score, the Samsung Transfix will run most Android apps on its Gingerbread 2.3 operating system. With a removable microSD card, storage isn't an issue, and that slide-out keyboard is handy for those who prefer them.

Cricket's smartphone plans start at $55 per month, but there is no need to sign a two-year contract and no activation fees. These Cricket deals are online-only, so get clicking if you want to take advantage of them.

Samsung Replenish/Boost Mobile ($99.99)

Carrier Boost Mobile is another popular way to get no-contract smartphones for a good price, cheaper monthly fees and no long-term commitment requirement. For $5 or $10 extra per month, Boost customers can also make cheap calls internationally to landline phones. The Samsung Replenish is available for Boost customers for $99.99. It runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread and offers a touchscreen and separate QWERTY keyboard. Like Virgin Mobile, Boost Mobile also offers the prepaid BlackBerry Curve 8530 for $99.99.

Boost Mobile offers a wide variety of plans, many of which boast "Shrinkage", which can reduce your monthly costs if you keep payments up-to-date. Unlimited plans begin at $50 per month, but expect an extra $5 per month for Android and $10 per month for BlackBerry plans. But with no contracts and a dependable nationwide network, these are still good deals.

Great deals not offered by the carriers

Online retailers often have great bargains on certain smartphones that may usurp the deals offered by the carriers. Walmart, for example, is currently offering the LG Optimus V for $99.99, a $20 reduction on the device at Virgin's own site. This Android smartphone runs an older version of Google's operating system (Android 2.2), but that should still serve many people just fine. It has a 3.2-inch touchscreen, and boasts Swype text entry for easy virtual keyboard input.

Also, prospective prepaid customers should keep a careful eye on AmazonWireless.com. There are often no-contract Android devices available like the Samsung R720 Vitality prepaid smartphone on Cricket for $73.99, or the Samsung Admire on MetroPCS. Be warned, however, that these deals come and go quickly.

Want a Windows 7 phone or older iPhone?

Unfortunately, it is virtually impossible to find any no-contract options for new Windows 7 smartphones that come in under the $100 mark. The Nokia Lumia 710 Windows 7 device can be purchased on T-Mobile as a prepaid smartphone but you'll need to pony-up $329.99 for it. If you do want to get your hands on the latest Nokia Lumia 900, it is available at AT&T for a mere $99.99, but you'll need to be a new customer signing-up for a full two-year agreement. That means you will spend nearly as much as you paid for it each month for the entire length of your contract (or suffer early termination fees).

As for Apple's iconic iPhone? Well, the newest iPhone 4S is pretty much a contract-only device with AT&T, Sprint or Verizon, and is likely to set you back $200 right off the bat. Thereafter, you will be on the hook for an expensive two-year commitment. Older iPhone models are available at better prices from AT&T, however. A new iPhone 3GS with 8GB of storage on board can be had for just $0.99, or choose a refurbished one for a mere penny. The catch? You guessed it – you'll be signing a new, two-year contract with a required data plan. If you are looking for all the great apps and games the iPhone offers, but don't want the long-term monthly payments, you're best bet is to pick up a new Wi-Fi only iPod touch for $200 (and not have access to an actual phone). You can also take your chances and buy an unlocked used iPhone on eBay and other sites.

Texting boosts your happiness, ease depression

Texting on mobile phones often gets bad press - but new research has shown that sending and receiving text messages can actually improve your mood if you're depressed.

Although it's blamed for everything from illiteracy to car crashes, researchers at the University of California

HOwever, clinical psychologist and author of the study, Professor Adrian Aguilera, believes everyone experiences an uplift in their mood when they receive or respond to a text message from a friend or family member.

Previous research has found that receiving texts or BlackBerry messages produces a temporary 'high' or endorphin rush, which can make constant mobile phone checking addictive.

Professor Aguilera's research focused on patients with mental health problems. 'The people I wanted to impact directly didn't have as much access to computers and the internet,' he says. 'So I thought about using mobile phones to send text messages to remind them to practice the skills covered in therapy sessions.' Three-quarters reported an improvement in mood. have now found clear mental health benefits of texting among depressed patients.
